Many people can live in a location all their lives and not know its history. Each city in the Rio Grande Valley is richly immersed in agricultural history and remarkable tales. The City of Alamo is no different. With the growth that the city has experienced over the years, it’s important for history to be preserved and passed down to new generations.
Your business can thrive in a city with a retail demand potential of over $500 million within a 10-minute radius. Let us help you.
Our City’s Foundation
Beginning in 1902, Peter Ebenezer Blalock and George L. Hawkins acquired 32,000 acres of land surrounding where the citycurrently sits that also extended 15 miles north of the Rio Grande River. By 1908, both men had laid out the town, built shipping pens and established a railroad depot named Ebenezer. When a community of buyers housed in temporary dwellings settled at the site, it became known as Camp Ebenezer. The Official Historical Marker indicating the site’s original location can be found in front of Alamo Middle School at 1819 U.S. Business 83.
In 1909, Blalock’s and Hawkins’ ranching plans ended with them selling the tract to the Alamo Land and Sugar Company. The company moved the town from Camp Ebenezer to higher ground for better drainage. C.H. Swallow and Renfro B. Creager subsequently formed the Alamo Townsite Company. The site was promoted to prospective settlers as the town of Forum. This was changed to Swallow in 1909 when the first post office was established.
A Familiar Name
The site’s name was later changed to Alamo, and in 1919, the Alamo Progressive Club was formed, later becoming the Chamber of Commerce. In 1920, the First State Bank of Alamo opened. The city began to grow steadily after its incorporation in 1924. In 1925, its population was reported at 200.
By 1936, Alamo had 1,018 residents and fifty businesses. It served mainly as a shipping point for vegetables and citrus fruits during the 1940s and 1950s. The population grew to 1,944 in 1940 and 3,017 in 1950. In 1990, it reached 8,210, and by 2000, it surged to 14,760!
Alamo Today
Today, Alamo Land and Sugar Company’s headquarters can still be visited at 801 Main St. The building now houses Alamo Inn, a birding bookshop and doctors’ offices. The city has grown tremendously since its foundation, becoming a part of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Texas. Businesses like H-E-B, Walmart, Wingstop, Alamo Fitness Center, Coffee Time and Tower Burger have made their home here and so can you!
