The Original Willie’s Bar-B-Q: Small Town Cooking with Big Time Taste
If you’re looking for authentic barbeque, you may not have to look far. The Original Willie’s Bar-B-Q was named one of the best places for barbeque in Texas by Texas Monthly in June of 2013. With a prestige like that, it’s not a surprise the restaurant has been booming for over 20 years.
Willie Gonzalez, Jr. first opened the doors to his establishment in 1992 because he saw a need to give his city something more.
“I was very good at hosting family barbeques and I wanted to provide Alamo with a different type of eatery,” said Gonzalez.
Not affiliated with Willie B’s Barbeque, The Original Willie’s Bar-B-Q has enough merit to stand on its own. The Texas Monthly staff who enjoyed all Willie’s had to offer gave rave reviews.
“This joint has a large menu that caters to local tastes (brisket tacos, fajita plates), and it was packed during the weekday lunch rush. Meats are all available by the pound…smoked to perfection with pecan wood, a rarity in South Texas, where mesquite tends to be the norm. Willie’s thin, sweet sauce serves as a nice complement. While beef ribs are sometimes more visually appealing than they are delicious, the ones here do not disappoint, featuring a hearty smoke flavor and fully rendered fat.”
According to Gonzalez, the most popular dish is their slow smoked pecan brisket and giant stuffed potatoes. So, while the Texas Monthly critic may have enjoyed his visit, he may have very well missed the best part of the menu!
It’s All About the Customers
Accolades aside, Gonzalez knows it’s all about the customers. The owner reveals he loves seeing the smile on returning customers because he did his part to ensure they always receive quality food. Gonzalez also admitted the appreciation he has for his customers knowing they must “step outside the box” when it comes to enjoying the ambiance and atmosphere of Willie’s Bar-B-Q.
Consistently rated over 4 out of 5 stars, The Original Willie’s Bar-B-Q is a favorite of both the people of Alamo and out-of-towners. Patrons have claimed it is not only the best barbeque in South Texas, but also possibly the best barbeque they’ve ever tasted!
Even with the praise, Gonzalez doesn’t plan to stop trying to improve his restaurant and the customers’ experience.
“Our hope for the future is to update our restaurant by expanding and remodeling,” said Gonzalez.
This barbecue joint has been open for 24 years and hopefully with Gonzalez’s vision, will remain so for another 24!
