Established in 1943, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge has been attracting residents and visitors to the enchanting City of Alamo for years. The park’s 2,088-acre size has over 400 bird species and is often referred to as the “jewel” of the National Wildlife Refuge System. It offers more than 14 miles of trails that visitors can walk to enjoy wildlife tours. It is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Nature tourists visiting Santa Ana exceed 165,000 per year, with 99,000 attending for birdwatching. More than 90% stay three-to-seven nights to experience all that the refuge has to offer, including their treetop observation tower and rarities like the indigo snake and endangered ocelot. Other activities and attractions include:

  • Photography
  • Stargazing
  • Nature Trails
  • Hiking
  • A Nature Tram
  • Family Fun Day
  • Winter Texan Appreciation Day

Contributing over $34 million per year into Alamo’s economy, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is a vital source to our local community via job creation opportunities and the growth of local businesses that stem as a result in the increase of visitors to the city.

Profitable Green

Ecotourism has also been a game-changer when it comes to environmental conservation. It has essentially made it profitable to be environmentally conscious. When your key features are pristine environments and birdwatching, it is paramount to invest in programs that willprotect these environments for years to come.

Ecotourism is at the heart of what Alamo believes in. We want the world to experience the beauty we wake up to every day. As such, we have put extensive work into preserving and promoting bird habitats across the city. We welcome tourists of the human and avian variety.

A Greener Initiative

solarpanels1At the Alamo Economic Development Corporation (EDC), we make sure small businesses are aware of every incentive we have available. Ecotourism is a very important component of the city, and it’s spearheaded by the refuge.

According to Environmental Leader, consumers are 53% more likely to spend on environmentally friendly products from a company that has a strong environmental reputation. Below are some tips to make sure your business is taking advantage of the ecotourism boost:

  • You’ll want ecotourists to visit your business for unique experiences that they can’t find anywhere else.
  • Ecotourism is a “service industry.” What does your business offer that might tap into the ecotourism spending power? Do you sell produce? Maybe you can sell jams or fruits straight from the farm.
  • Customer service is still at the heart of a great consumer experience. Providing little details, such as the convenience of cell phone charging areas for guests, can lead to loyalty and repeated business. It shows that you care to provide comfort along with wanting to make a sale.

We Can Make a Difference Together

At the heart of it all, the City of Alamo believes that the culture and beauty of the community are what make us special.
