About the Festival

When creating this festival, the City of Alamo wanted to capture the essence of the Rio Grande Valley’s agricultural history. During the 1940s and 1950s, Alamo was a shipping point for vegetables and citrus fruits. One prominent fruit had a large patch near the city’s Wal-Mart. Watermelons eventually grew into the festival’s focal point, gaining popularity across South Texas since its start in 2013. Since then, attendance has grown from 3,000 to more than 5,000.
