Alamo Events and Programs

Alamo is constantly finding ways to engage the community in business, charity work and economic initiatives. Getting involved in the community is a large part of how the EDC operates. Here are a few of the events and developmental programs going on to make Alamo a bigger and better city.

Autism Walk

autism awareness walk 2016

The Alamo EDC encouraged Alamo residents to participate in the Pharr San Juan Alamo Independent School District’s 4th Annual Autism Awareness Walk. The event worked to raise awareness about autism, which affects millions worldwide. The walk took place at 8:00 AM on Saturday, April 2nd at the PSJA ISD Stadium’s north entrance on 601 E. Kelly Ave. in Pharr.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex disorder that affects the brain. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 68 people living in the United States are on the autism-spectrum. The disease affects more than 3 million Americans.

Ribbon Cutting

Regional Medical laboratory - East

The Alamo Economic Development Corporation attended a special ribbon-cutting event held by the Alamo Chamber of Commerce to welcome Regional Medical Laboratory-East. The new facility is located on 427 East Duranta, Ste. 105.

Rio Grande Regional Hospital offers an outpatient lab for the facility’s patients. The lab offers more than 30 basic examinations, including cholesterol, thyroid and allergy tests, among others. Wellness screens are also available with no appointment or doctor’s orders.

The lab is one of many new businesses that have made Alamo home. In December of 2015, Goodwill Industries of South Texas, Inc. opened the seventh Goodwill store and donation station in the Valley.

Winter Texans

winter texan training

Alamo is welcoming Winter Texans to serve as city ambassadors this summer. The city held training for Winter Texans interested in becoming ambassadors at Fire Station #2. Winter Texan Ambassadors are tasked with promoting Alamo to their peers and residents back in their native cities.

Promoting the city outside of the Rio Grande Valley is a major factor in increasing Winter Texan numbers. According to a 2014 report from (then) University of Texas-Pan American’s Business and Tourism Research Center, which appeared in The Monitor, the number of Winter Texans has decreased in recent years. The report revealed that from 2009 to 2010, Winter Texans boosted the Valley’s economy by spending more than $800 million. In 2013, they spent $710 million.
