As the weather cools down, this time of year is perfect for birdwatching in Alamo. Located in the City of Alamo off of Highway 281 and Alamo Road is the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, considered the ‘jewel’ of the National Wildlife Refuge system.
Some facts about the refuge:
- Was established in 1943 as a protected area for migratory birds.
- Is made up of 2,088 acres of land.
- Over 400 bird species have been spotted here.
- It offers a place to witness birds, butterflies and other species not found elsewhere in the U.S.
- It’s also the northernmost point for species of birds that range from Central America into South America.
- Half of all butterfly species found in North America can be seen here.
- It includes 12 miles of foot trails and seven miles of road trails.
- Every year, over 165,000 tourists visit the refuge, with 99,000 coming to birdwatch.
Celebrating 75 Years
On December 1st, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge will reach a milestone and celebrate its 75th anniversary. The festivities will run from 9:00 AM through 3:00 PM. The refuge will be open from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM and will include:
- Guest speakers
- Historical presentations
- Birding tours
- Nature walks
- Kayaking
- Arts and crafts
- Fishing
Take a Tour
Visiting the refuge ensures a great time and is open seven days a week from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. During winter, a 60-passengar tram treks across the refuge three times a day.
