Why You Should Consider South Texas as a Prime Location for Your Business

When many people speak of South Texas, cities like San Antonio are the first to be mentioned. Although some do consider San Antonio to be part of this region, the Rio Grande Valley has seen an influx in population that contributes to expanding businesses and development.

Southern Texas

The Rio Grande Valley, or simply “The Valley”, encompasses a four-county region consisting of Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy and Starr Counties. This area was named the “fifth largest metropolitan area in Texas”, surpassing El Paso. Residents and visitors love this area because of its shopping destinations, proximity to the international border and educational opportunities available to them.

A Shopping Mecca

Retail is booming in South Texas, attracting newer and bigger developments across the Rio Grande Valley. One of the RGV’s biggest shopping destinations, La Plaza Mall, revealed last year plans to add fifty stores, four junior anchor stores and six restaurants. A new 245,000 additional square foot shopping experience will add to its current 1.2 million square feet. The Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley is also expanding into a total of one million square feet, bringing Bob’s Steak & Chop House, clothing retailer A’GACI and many more.

There are also two new developments that will encompass numerous retail opportunities. Tres Lagos will serve as a residential area that will have 1.5 million square feet of commercial and retail space. La Resaca Market is another planned community that will encompass 500,000 square feet of retail and entertainment with restaurants, a hotel, shopping varieties and more!

A Proximity to the Border

The International Border is in our backyard, meaning the RGV is impacted in a way that no other region is. You can experience a diverse range of authentic foods, traditions and festivals. The proximity to the border not only brings diversity, but also traveling perks. Residents and visitors have direct access to some of the biggest cities in Mexico, including Reynosa, Ciudad Rio Bravo and Matamoros. Although you can experience a diverse culture throughout South Texas, the RGV has the strongest ties in creating a unique atmosphere with our neighbors to the south.

Educational Opportunities

Higher educational opportunities are not only plentiful in the Rio Grande Valley, but also expanding. From technical schools to a university and school of medicine, there are resources for everyone to continue their education. Some of these educational opportunities include:

  • University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
  • South Texas College
  • Texas State Technical College
  • South Texas Vocational Tech
  • Southern Careers Institute

Two more exciting educational opportunities are also coming to the RGV. Texas A&M has signed an agreement to open a satellite campus to provide more options for education. The other is a new state-of-the-art educational and training Public Safety Complex. This will provide education for current law enforcement and public safety officers for the entire RGV. This not only benefits residents and visitors, but also allows for businesses to expand, relocate and emerge in the RGV.

Business Opportunities

One emerging city in the RGV is making sure that businesses have a solid foundation to grow and expand on. Alamo has been making a name for itself with its robust ecotourism, locally owned restaurants and annual festivities. This allows the Alamo Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to attract businesses looking for a prime location in South Texas.
